“I learned to drive on these streets. I know which intersections scare me, and they’re the same ones where riders get hurt.”

Francisco Morales was raised in West Covina and graduated from West Covina High School in 2008. His office is fifteen minutes east in San Dimas.

That matters in a motorcycle case. Knowing where the cameras are on Azusa Avenue, how the lanes merge near the Plaza, and which intersections have a history is how you prove what a driver did.

We handle motorcycle claims against drivers, rideshare companies and commercial vehicles. We also handle claims against your own insurer when the other driver has no coverage or too little.

Where riders get hurt

A ride across West Covina, and where it goes wrong

Most West Covina motorcycle crashes happen on a handful of wide, busy streets. Here they are, roughly north to south.

Azusa Avenue at Cameron and at Workman

Six lanes, fast traffic and constant left turns into shopping centers. A driver turning left looks for cars, misses the motorcycle, and turns across your lane.

The Plaza West Covina area

Drivers circling for parking, pulling out of driveways and changing lanes at the last second for the mall entrances. Parking-lot crashes often get no police report, which makes early photos and witness names more important.

Garvey Avenue and the 10 Freeway ramps

Drivers merging on and off the 10 cut across lanes and brake hard. Rear-end crashes at the ramps throw riders into traffic.

Amar Road and Valley Boulevard

Long, fast stretches toward Walnut and the City of Industry, with side streets and driveways where drivers pull out without seeing an oncoming bike.

Up Azusa Avenue

Highway 39 and Glendora Mountain Road

Azusa Avenue runs straight north out of West Covina and turns into Highway 39 through San Gabriel Canyon. On weekends it is one of the busiest riding roads in the San Gabriel Valley, along with Glendora Mountain Road.

Canyon crashes usually involve a driver crossing the center line on a curve, or loose gravel and road damage. A public agency may share the blame, and those claims have a six-month deadline. Call us early.

California law, plainly

Six things the insurance company won’t explain

Lane splitting is legal

Vehicle Code § 21658.1

California defines it and does not ban it. Splitting lanes does not make a crash your fault. The CHP publishes rider safety guidance.

The helmet argument has limits

Vehicle Code § 27803

No helmet can reduce a recovery only for injuries a helmet would have prevented. It has nothing to do with a broken leg.

Partial fault still pays

Comparative negligence

If you were 25% at fault, you still recover 75%. The insurer’s first fault number is an opening offer, not a finding.

Two years to file

Code of Civil Procedure § 335.1

Most injury lawsuits must be filed within two years of the crash.

Six months for public agencies

Government Code § 911.2

A city bus, a county truck or a road defect means a written claim within six months.

Your policy can pay too

Uninsured / underinsured motorist

If the driver has little or no insurance, or fled, your own uninsured motorist coverage can make up the difference.

West Covina motorcycle accident questions

Who takes the report for a motorcycle crash in West Covina?

The West Covina Police Department at 1444 W. Garvey Ave. S. for crashes on city streets. Crashes on the 10 Freeway are handled by the CHP Baldwin Park Area office. We request the report on every case and check it for errors.

I was hit in the Plaza West Covina parking lot. Do I still have a claim?

Yes. Parking lots are private property, so police often won’t write a full report, but that has nothing to do with who was at fault. Photos, witness names and store cameras matter even more in a parking-lot case.

Is lane splitting legal in California?

Yes. California defines lane splitting in Vehicle Code section 21658.1 and does not prohibit it. Splitting lanes does not make a crash your fault. The question is whether the driver was careless.

I crashed on Highway 39. Can I bring a claim?

Often, yes. If another driver crossed into your lane, the claim is against that driver. If road damage or debris caused the crash, a public agency may be responsible, and a written claim is due within six months.

How far is your office from West Covina?

About fifteen minutes east on the 10 and the 57. We are at 151 W. Bonita Ave. in San Dimas. Our attorney grew up in West Covina, and we regularly meet riders at home or at Queen of the Valley.

How long do I have to file?

Two years for most injury lawsuits in California, and six months for a claim against a public agency. Video and witnesses disappear much faster than that.

What does it cost?

Nothing up front. Our fee comes out of the recovery, and if we don’t recover money for you, you owe no fee. The consultation is free, in English or Spanish.
