Where crashes happen on the 10, west to east

The 10 changes character every few miles through our area. Each segment produces its own kind of collision, and each has its own agency, hospital and courthouse.

Baldwin Park · West CovinaThe 10/605 interchange and Francisquito Avenue

One of the busiest interchanges in the region, under construction and lane shifts for years. Rear-end and lane-change collisions in stop-and-go traffic, injury crashes at the short Francisquito and Puente ramps. Kaiser Baldwin Park and Queen of the Valley are the closest ERs. If your crash was on the 605 itself, see our 605 Freeway accident lawyer page.

West Covina · CovinaAzusa, Citrus and Barranca

The Eastland Center and Plaza West Covina exits feed heavy retail traffic onto short ramps. Chain collisions in the afternoon backup that stretches from Kellogg Hill west through Covina. Inter-Community Hospital in Covina is minutes away.

San Dimas · PomonaKellogg Hill and the 10/57/71 interchange

The 10 climbs Kellogg Hill with no westbound truck lane, so trucks and commuters share lanes to the crest at Via Verde. The Kellogg Interchange, named for the ranch that is now Cal Poly Pomona, merges the 10, 57 and 71 in a design that does not carry every movement. Multi-vehicle pileups are routine. Pomona Valley Hospital is the trauma center.

Pomona · ClaremontGarey, Towne and Indian Hill

The 10 at Indian Hill Boulevard has a history of chain-reaction and fatal collisions, and the Garey and Towne ramps carry Cal Poly, Fairplex and downtown Pomona traffic. Still CHP Baldwin Park and Los Angeles County.

Montclair · UplandMonte Vista, Central, Mountain and Euclid

Across the San Bernardino County line the agency changes to CHP Rancho Cucamonga and the court to San Bernardino. A ten-vehicle crash on the 10 in Upland killed one and injured six. Montclair Place and the Transcenter add mall and transit traffic at Monte Vista and Central.

Ontario · FontanaThe 15 interchange and Sierra Avenue

Truck traffic to the Inland Empire warehouses concentrates here, with the 10/15 interchange and the Sierra Avenue exit in Fontana producing fatal DUI, pedestrian and multi-vehicle crashes. Kaiser Fontana and Arrowhead Regional in Colton handle the injuries.

What makes a 10 Freeway case different

Three things. First, the speed. The 10 through our area is signed at 65 and driven faster, so a rear-end collision that would be a sore neck on Arrow Highway is a disc injury or a fracture here. Second, the number of parties. Freeway crashes in stop-and-go traffic are chain collisions more often than not, which means several drivers, several insurers and a CHP report that frequently declines to assign primary fault. Our freeway pileup page explains how fault is divided. Third, the trucks. The 10 is the main truck route between the ports and the Inland Empire distribution centers, and a collision with a commercial truck is a different case from the first hour, with electronic logging data, engine data and camera footage that the carrier controls and can lose.

The evidence that decides these cases has to be gathered fast. Dash-cam and truck camera footage, event data recorders in the cars, Caltrans lane-closure and ramp-meter records for the day, and the CHP report, dispatch log and photographs. We send preservation letters within days of being hired, and in a serious case we retain an accident reconstructionist before the vehicles are salvaged.

What a 10 Freeway accident claim can recover

California law makes the at-fault driver, and their insurer, responsible for the full cost of the crash: the emergency visit and every follow-up, the months of therapy that follow most collisions, surgery and future care, lost wages and earning capacity, the vehicle and the rental, and compensation for pain, suffering and the loss of your normal life. If you were partly at fault, pure comparative negligence reduces the recovery by your share rather than barring it. Because many drivers on the 10 carry only California’s $30,000 minimum, we open your own uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage on the first day whenever the injury may exceed the other driver’s policy, and we look for an employer’s or a trucking company’s policy when one exists.

10 Freeway accident questions

Which CHP office handles a crash on the 10 Freeway in the San Gabriel Valley?

From the 605 east through Baldwin Park, West Covina, Covina, San Dimas, Pomona and Claremont, the CHP Baldwin Park Area office at 14039 Francisquito Ave. From the county line east through Montclair, Upland, Ontario and Fontana, the CHP Rancho Cucamonga Area office. West of the 605 it is the CHP East Los Angeles office. We request the report from the right office on every case.

What is Kellogg Hill and why are there so many crashes there?

Kellogg Hill is the grade the 10 climbs between West Covina and the 10/57/71 interchange on the Pomona and San Dimas line. Westbound there is no truck lane, so slow trucks and fast commuters share the same lanes, traffic compresses at the crest near Via Verde, and rear-end and lane-change collisions follow. Named for the Kellogg ranch that is now Cal Poly Pomona.

I was hit at the 10/57/71 interchange. Is that one case or several?

One case, but it can involve several drivers and several insurers, because the interchange merges traffic from three freeways and multi-vehicle collisions are common there. We identify every at-fault driver and every policy, including your own underinsured motorist coverage, and pursue them together.

Where is a 10 Freeway accident lawsuit filed?

For crashes in Los Angeles County, the Los Angeles Superior Court’s East District, usually the Pomona Courthouse South or the West Covina Courthouse. For crashes east of the county line in Montclair, Upland or Fontana, San Bernardino County Superior Court at the San Bernardino Justice Center. Most cases settle before a lawsuit is filed.

The 10/605 interchange was under construction when I crashed. Does that matter?

It can. If a lane closure, missing signage or a traffic-control setup contributed, a claim against Caltrans or its contractor is possible, with a six-month deadline for the government claim. We obtain the traffic-control plan and closure schedule for the day through a Public Records Act request.

What if a truck hit me on the 10?

The 10 is a primary truck route between the ports and the Inland Empire warehouses. A truck case turns on evidence the carrier controls, the electronic logging device, engine data, and dash-cam, so we send a preservation demand the same day. Trucking policies are far larger than a private driver’s, which is why they are fought hard.

How long do I have to file after a 10 Freeway crash?

Two years from the crash to file an injury lawsuit under Code of Civil Procedure section 335.1. Six months for a government claim if Caltrans, a county or a transit vehicle is involved. Camera and truck data must be preserved within days.

Which hospital do 10 Freeway crash victims go to?

It depends on the segment. Kaiser Baldwin Park near the 605, Queen of the Valley in West Covina, Inter-Community in Covina, Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center for trauma in the Pomona area, San Antonio Regional in Upland, Montclair Hospital, Kaiser Fontana, and Arrowhead Regional in Colton for major trauma on the Inland Empire side.

Do you handle 10 Freeway cases in Spanish?

Yes. Francisco Morales is fully bilingual and handles the entire case in Spanish when the client prefers.

How much does a freeway accident lawyer cost?

Nothing up front. We work on a contingency fee, a percentage of the recovery paid only when the case resolves. No recovery, no attorney’s fee. The consultation is free.

Talk to an attorney before you talk to the insurance company.

Free consultation, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. No fee unless we win. Two years to file under California law, and the evidence does not wait.
