La Verne Truck Accident Lawyer

The 210 cuts La Verne in half, and the Fairplex, Brackett Field and the Arrow Highway industrial strip sit on its southern edge. That is where the trucks are: Inland Empire rigs on the Foothill Freeway, show trucks and livestock haulers on Arrow and White during fair season, and delivery trucks on Foothill and D Street year round. When one of them hurts you, a La Verne truck accident lawyer who is three and a half miles away, six minutes on Foothill Boulevard, and answers his own phone matters. Francisco Morales handles the case himself, in English or Spanish, and there is no fee unless we win.

Where truck accidents happen in La Verne

La Verne is a college town with a freeway through the middle of it. The 210 carries Inland Empire freight west from the 15 toward the 57 and the San Gabriel Valley, and the three La Verne interchanges, San Dimas Avenue, Fruit Street and Foothill at Wheeler, are where those trucks merge with people going to the University, Old Town and the Metro station. South of the tracks, Arrow Highway and White Avenue serve the Fairplex, Brackett Field and the warehouses along the rail line. Most La Verne truck crashes happen in one of those two places.

01The 210 at Fruit Street and Foothill Boulevard

The Foothill Freeway is the only freeway inside the city, and its ramps are short. Fruit Street is a tight diamond interchange next to homes and a shopping center. Foothill at Wheeler is the exit for the University and Old Town. CHP logs on this stretch in 2026 include a Honda Civic and a big rig ending up together in the gore point at the Foothill ramp in June, a disabled rig blocking the slow lane in July, and a smoking big rig on the right shoulder in September. Merge crashes and rear-end collisions into slowed traffic at the ramps are the pattern.

02The westbound 210 toward San Dimas and the 57

West of La Verne the freeway meets the 57 interchange and the Lone Hill Avenue exit, and truck volume roughly doubles as Orange County traffic joins. On January 12, 2026, a Toyota sedan ended up underneath a big rig on the westbound 210 near Lone Hill, and the driver was cut out and taken to Pomona Valley Hospital. Underride crashes, where a car slides beneath a trailer, are the deadliest thing that happens on this freeway, and they are why the condition of a trailer’s underride guard is part of every case we open.

03Arrow Highway and the rail line

Arrow Highway runs along La Verne’s south side past the Metro A Line station, the Fairplex and the industrial buildings between the tracks and the freeway. It is the surface truck route between the Irwindale gravel plants, San Dimas, Pomona and Montclair, and it is a designated truck route in every neighboring city. Tractor-trailers turn across it into yards and docks, dump trucks run it at speed between deliveries, and the intersections at White, Wheeler and Fruit are where they meet cars headed to the fair or the station.

04White Avenue, Fairplex Drive and the fair

The Fairplex covers 543 acres between La Verne and the 10, and it works year round: the county fair in May, the NHRA drag races, trade shows, swap meets and concerts. Every event means show trucks, carnival ride haulers, livestock trailers and vendor rigs moving in and out on White Avenue, McKinley and Fairplex Drive, usually on a schedule and usually at night. Brackett Field, the county airport next door, adds fuel trucks and service vehicles. Wide right turns and trucks backing across White Avenue are the crashes this corner produces.

05Foothill Boulevard, Route 66, through town

Foothill is the old highway and La Verne’s main commercial street, and the state still counts truck traffic on it. It is where delivery trucks, box trucks and landscaping rigs stop in the right lane, pull out of shopping centers and turn across two lanes of traffic at Wheeler, D Street and Fruit. The truck numbers are small next to the 210, but the speed difference between a stopped delivery truck and traffic coming off the freeway is what produces rear-end crashes here.

06D Street, Bonita Avenue and the University

The University of La Verne sits on Third Street between D Street and the tracks, and Old Town’s restaurants and the new A Line station bring people on foot into the same blocks that delivery trucks and construction vehicles use. Bonita Avenue is the two-lane route west to our office in San Dimas and east to Pomona and Casa Colina. A truck making a delivery on D Street or a dump truck cutting through on Bonita is sharing the road with students, cyclists and pedestrians, and the injuries in those crashes are severe.

Why the numbers matter

A loaded five-axle tractor-trailer can weigh 80,000 pounds, about twenty times a car, and at the 55 mile-an-hour truck limit it needs roughly the length of two football fields to stop. On a short ramp like Fruit Street, with traffic backing up from Foothill, that is the whole case. The truck’s engine data shows whether the driver had the room and did not use it.

The CHP’s 2026 log for the 210 in La Verne reads like a list of the ways truck crashes start. On June 16, a Honda Civic and a big rig collided at the eastbound Foothill Boulevard ramp and both came to rest in the gore point. On June 15, a big rig sideswiped a work vehicle on the westbound 10 and kept going, and the hit-and-run was reported at Towne Avenue and La Verne Avenue. On September 18, a big rig pulled onto the westbound shoulder at Foothill with smoke coming from underneath it and fire crews responded.

The evidence we lock down in the first 72 hours

The trucking company’s insurer usually has an adjuster and an accident reconstructionist on a serious crash the same day. This is what we go after to level that field.

Electronic logging device data

The driver’s hours for the trip and the seven days before it. Fatigue is the most common cause nobody sees at the scene, and the log either proves it or was edited.

Engine control module download

Speed, throttle, brake application and following distance in the seconds before impact. On a rear-end crash at the Fruit Street backup, it answers whether the truck could have stopped.

Dash-cam and cab-facing video

Most fleets run cameras both ways. Video of a driver on a phone coming down the 210 into the Foothill exit changes a case in a single frame.

Driver qualification file

License history, medical card, prior crashes and citations, training records, and the background check the carrier was required to run before it hired this driver.

Post-crash drug and alcohol tests

Federal rules require testing after a crash with a death, an injury treated away from the scene, or a tow. We confirm the test was done on time and get the result.

Maintenance, inspection and cargo records

Brake and tire records, the pre-trip inspection, the bill of lading and the weight ticket. For a carnival hauler or a gravel truck on Arrow Highway, the load paperwork alone can prove the truck was overweight or badly secured.

We also request the CHP or La Verne Police report and any Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team file, look up the carrier’s federal safety record by its USDOT number, canvass businesses on Foothill, Arrow Highway and White Avenue for camera footage before it is overwritten, and photograph the scene while the marks are still on the pavement. Call (626) 521-5402 before you talk to the trucking company’s insurer.

Why a truck case is not a big car accident case

The defendant is a business, the rules it broke are federal, and the evidence that proves the case is stored on its truck. Each of those changes what has to happen in the first week.

1

Federal rules set the standard of care

The rigs on the 210 are mostly interstate carriers running between the Inland Empire and the rest of the country, and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations govern them. Eleven hours of driving inside a fourteen-hour day with a thirty-minute break under Part 395. Driver qualification under Part 391. Drug and alcohol testing under Part 382. Inspection and maintenance under Part 396. When a violation caused the crash at Fruit Street, California treats it as negligence per se, which means the carrier has to explain the violation rather than you having to prove what a careful driver would have done.

2

The insurance is measured in millions

A car in California can carry as little as $30,000 per person in liability coverage. A truck over 10,001 pounds hauling general freight in interstate commerce must carry at least $750,000 under 49 CFR 387.9, and $5 million for certain hazardous loads. Most carriers add excess policies. A show truck contracted to the Fairplex may be covered by the promoter’s policy as well. The coverage exists to pay for a serious injury, and the adjuster knows it, so the fight is over fault, not bills.

3

More than one company is responsible

The driver works for a carrier that may lease its tractor from one company and pull a trailer owned by another. A broker arranged the load, a shipper packed it, and an outside shop signed off on the brakes. At a fair or a drag race, add the promoter and the vendor who hired the hauler. Each of them can share fault and each has its own policy. Sorting that out on day one is how the case gets fully paid instead of being pinned on a driver with nothing.

4

The evidence is on a clock

Federal rules only require a carrier to keep electronic driver logs for six months. The truck’s engine data can be overwritten when it goes back to work, and dash-cam video is deleted on a rolling schedule. The insurer’s investigator will be on the 210 the same day. We send a written preservation demand to the carrier, the broker and the insurer within days, so that if evidence disappears afterward, the jury hears why.

Who can be held responsible for a La Verne truck crash

The truck driver

For speeding, tailgating, an unsafe lane change at the Fruit Street or Foothill ramp, running a signal on Arrow or White, distraction, fatigue or impairment. California also limits any vehicle with three or more axles or a trailer to 55 miles an hour and the right-hand lanes under Vehicle Code 22406.

The motor carrier

The company whose USDOT number is on the door answers for its driver’s negligence and for its own: hiring a driver with a bad record, dispatching him past the hours limit, or skipping maintenance to keep the truck on the road. We check the carrier’s federal safety record before the first call with its adjuster.

The freight broker, the shipper and the event promoter

A broker that hands loads to carriers with poor safety scores can be liable for negligent selection. A shipper that loaded and sealed the trailer can be liable when a shifting or overweight load caused the crash. A promoter that scheduled trucks in and out of the Fairplex through residential streets at night can be part of the case too.

Tractor and trailer owners, lessors and maintenance shops

The tractor and the trailer often have different owners, and a leasing company or a contract shop that signed off on worn brakes or a bad tire becomes a defendant with its own insurance.

Manufacturers

Brake failures, tire blowouts and trailers without proper rear underride guards support product liability claims against the companies that built or sold them. The underride guard is the first thing we photograph after a car-under-trailer crash.

Caltrans, the City of La Verne or a contractor

When a lane closure, a missing sign, a bad signal or a construction zone on the 210 or a city street contributed to the crash, a government claim must be filed within six months under Government Code 911.2. We calendar that deadline the day we open the file.

What a La Verne truck accident claim can recover

The companies responsible for the truck owe the full cost of what the crash did to you, not the number their adjuster offers in the first week. In a truck case that usually includes:

  • Emergency and hospital care the ambulance, the ER or the trauma center in Pomona, surgery, imaging and the months of physical therapy that follow.
  • Future medical care a life-care plan when a brain injury, spinal cord injury or amputation will need treatment for years, often at Casa Colina down the street.
  • Lost wages and lost earning capacity the paychecks you missed and the job you cannot go back to.
  • Pain, suffering and the loss of your normal life which California does not cap in a trucking case.
  • Your car and your property the vehicle, the rental, and what was inside it.
  • Wrongful death damages for a spouse, children or parents under Code of Civil Procedure section 377.60, including funeral costs and the loss of the person’s support, guidance and companionship.

Under California’s pure comparative negligence rule, a share of fault reduces the recovery by that share; it does not bar the claim. Immigration status has no bearing on any of it.

La Verne truck accident questions

Who investigates a truck accident in La Verne?

A crash on the 210 belongs to the California Highway Patrol, and the Baldwin Park Area office on Francisquito Avenue covers the Foothill Freeway through La Verne. A crash on Foothill Boulevard, Arrow Highway, White Avenue, D Street or any other city street goes to the La Verne Police Department at 2061 Third Street. We get the report either way, and on a serious freeway crash we find out whether the CHP’s Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team responded, because its file has measurements the standard report does not.

How far is your office from La Verne?

Three and a half miles, about six minutes. From the University take Bonita Avenue west into San Dimas, or Foothill west to San Dimas Avenue and south. We are at 151 W. Bonita Ave. in downtown San Dimas with free parking. If you cannot drive after the crash, Francisco meets La Verne clients at home, at Pomona Valley Hospital or at Casa Colina.

How much does a La Verne truck accident lawyer cost?

Nothing up front. We work on a contingency fee, a percentage of the recovery that is paid only when the case resolves. If there is no recovery there is no attorney’s fee. We advance the cost of accident reconstruction, engineers, medical witnesses, records and depositions while the case is open, and the first consultation is free. The trucking company’s insurer handles truck claims every day and you are handling one once, so make the call before you give a recorded statement.

Where would a La Verne truck accident lawsuit be filed?

La Verne is in the East District of the Los Angeles Superior Court, so a serious injury case is filed as an unlimited civil case at the Pomona Courthouse South, 400 Civic Center Plaza, ten minutes down Garey Avenue. Small claims for La Verne addresses go to the West Covina Courthouse. If the carrier is based out of state, it may move the case to federal court in Los Angeles, and we plan for that from the start.

How long do I have to file a claim after a truck crash in La Verne?

Two years from the crash to file a lawsuit for injuries or wrongful death under Code of Civil Procedure 335.1. If Caltrans, the City of La Verne, the County or another public entity contributed to the crash, a government claim is due within six months under Government Code 911.2. The useful deadline is shorter than either, because the carrier only has to keep the driver’s logs for six months and the truck’s data can be gone in days.

What makes a truck crash different from a car crash?

The weight, the rules, the money and the evidence. An 80,000-pound rig does damage a car cannot, so the injuries are worse. The company that runs the truck must follow federal hours, drug testing, hiring and maintenance rules, and breaking one is negligence per se. It carries at least $750,000 in coverage and usually far more. And it holds the log, the engine data and the video that show what happened, and sends investigators to the scene the same day. The case is won by getting that evidence early.

My car went under the trailer. Why does that matter to the case?

Underride crashes are the deadliest kind of truck collision because the car’s safety systems never engage; the trailer comes through the windshield. Federal rules require a rear underride guard on most trailers, and a guard that was missing, rusted, bent or built to an old standard is a claim against the trailer’s owner and its manufacturer on top of the claim against the driver. On the westbound 210 near Lone Hill in January 2026, a sedan was extricated from beneath a big rig. We photograph the guard before the trailer is moved.

The truck driver says I merged in front of him at Fruit Street. What now?

That is the standard defense at a short ramp, and the truck’s own equipment usually answers it. The forward camera, the engine control module and the electronic log show the truck’s speed, braking and following distance in the seconds before impact, and whether it was in a lane trucks are allowed to use. California follows pure comparative negligence, so even if you carry part of the fault, your recovery is reduced by that share rather than eliminated.

It was a fair truck, a carnival hauler or a delivery van, not a semi. Does that change anything?

Not much. Show trucks, carnival ride haulers, livestock trailers, box trucks and delivery vans working the Fairplex, Brackett Field or the Arrow Highway strip are commercial vehicles driven for a company, and any truck over 10,001 pounds in interstate commerce falls under the same federal rules as a semi. The harder question is which company answers for the driver, since the vendor, the hauler, the promoter and the brand on the truck may all be different businesses. We identify all of them and their insurers on day one.

Can I get medical treatment if I do not have health insurance?

Yes. Go to Pomona Valley Hospital on Garey Avenue for a serious injury, or to Foothill Presbyterian in Glendora or San Antonio Regional in Upland for an emergency room visit, the same day. After that we arrange treatment with orthopedists, physical therapists, chiropractors and imaging centers in the area who treat on a lien and are paid from the settlement. Immigration status does not affect your right to treatment or to a recovery.
